John Halsall

Marine & Seascape specialist

Born  1943 and lived in Laxey, Isle of Man at Ham & Egg Terrace.  John now lives in the Capital, Douglas with his long term partner Sheila.

Like most talented Artists, his early school years were uneventful and he found his talents in practical subjects rather than academic ones.  He tells me that, he even won a prize at school for his skill.

From an early stage he could always be found ‘ Doodling’ as he calls it and through his own perseverance and willingness to develop his artistic  abilities & skill.  He  has now, I think you’ll agree succeeded in honing his ability to quite a high level as a painter of exceptional talent!

John has pretty much spent his life at sea aboard ships, trawlers and marine vessels of one form or another.  His first maritime job was with the Isle of Man, Steam Packet in 1958 when he was just 15 years old.  His main artistic influences are Jack Spurling, John Nicolson to name but a few.

In 1959, he joined the Merchant Navy and continued a life at sea for more than another 20 years.  During his time at sea, he was all the while observing and developing his keen eye for detail and  his passions for Art & the Sea.  Has managed to combine both in his sometimes almost photographic detailed Marine works.

John’s most favorite vessell to paint has and continues to be the Manx build ship, The Star of India.  It was this vessel which afforded him a unique opportunity back in 2003.  he was invited by the San Diego, Maritime Museme to hold an exhibition of his works on board the  Star of India, which has since been moored in their port.

We are both honored and excited to give you, our Customers/Viewers the opportunity to be the first ones to view, admire and indeed buy John Halsall’s work.  These pieces are not only works of Art, but they are Investment pieces and more importantly glimpses into a bygone era of Maritime history both on the Isle of Man as well as Internationally.
